UPDATE: To reflect Traffic Fatality count for 2020.
On September 3, 2020, at about 6:32 A.M. a fatal major motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian occurred on Keolu Drive in the Kailua area.
An 80-year-old male resident of Kailua was walking northeast in the bike lane on Keolu Drive. A pick-up truck, operated by a 57-year-old male, was travelling in the same direction and veered to the right of the roadway. The pick-up truck collided with two parked vehicles and the 80-year-old male pedestrian.
As a result of the collision, the 80-year-old pedestrian was taken to an area hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries.
At this time speed does not appear to be a factor, however, impairment does appear to be a contributing factor for this collision.
The 57-year-old male driver was subsequently arrested for Negligent Homicide in the First Degree and Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an intoxicant. The investigation is on-going.
This is the 35th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year as compared to 39 at this same time in 2019.
