UPDATE: To reflect Traffic Fatality count for 2020.
On August 27, 2020, at about 4:00 A.M., a fatal motor vehicle collision occurred on the H-1 Freeway westbound near the Radford Pedestrian Bridge in the Halawa area.
On August 27, 2020, at about 4:00 A.M., a 52-year-old male driver’s vehicle had stalled out and was positioned on the H-1 Freeway westbound shoulder. The 52-year old male had exited his vehicle and was standing to the front of the vehicle when a 30-year old female driver observed him standing near the roadway.
For unknown reasons, the 30-year old female driver swerved into the shoulder lane and collided with the stalled vehicle. Attempting to move out of the way, the 52-year old male stepped into the westbound traffic lanes and was struck by a 60-year old male driver.
The 60-year old male driver then collided with the 52-year old male’s vehicle that had been pushed into the westbound lanes due to the initial vehicle collision. The 60-year old male’s vehicle then came to rest on the shoulder of the freeway.
The 52-year old male was pronounced dead at the scene.
At this time, neither speed, drugs, or alcohol appear to be contributing factors.
This is the 35th Traffic Fatality of this year compared to 38 at the same time in 2019.
The investigation is ongoing.
