On December 10, 2025, at about 7:12 P.M., a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a moped occurred on Houghtailing Street in the Kalihi area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 22-year-old female moped rider was traveling southbound on Houghtailing Street at a high rate of speed when she attempted to execute a left onto Olomea Street and collided with a 72-year-old male motorist, who was traveling northbound on Houghtailing Street.
As a result of the collision, the 22-year-old female moped rider was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition, where she later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
The 22-year-old female moped rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The 72-year-old male motorist remained at the scene and was not injured as a result of the collision.
At this time, speed appears to be a contributing factor of this collision. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol are factors.
This is the 79th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year compared to 47 at the same time in 2024.
The investigation is ongoing.
