On September 23, 2025, at about 7:45 PM, a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a moped occurred on North King Street east of Umi Street in the Kalihi area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 44-year-old male moped operator was traveling eastbound on North King Street and lost control ejecting the 44-year-old male moped operator onto the roadway, where he was struck by a 60-year-old male motorist that was traveling westbound on North King Street and executed a left turn into a driveway.
As a result of the collision, the 44-year-old male moped operator was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The 44-year-old male moped operator was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The 60-year-old male motorist remained at the scene and was not injured as a result of the collision.
At this time, it is unknown if speed alcohol or drugs is a contributing factor.
This is the 64th traffic fatality on Oahu compared to 31 at the same in 2024.
The investigation is ongoing.
