***ORIGINAL***

On December 31, 2024, at about 2:40 PM, a critical motor vehicle collision involving large box truck and a passenger van occurred on the H-1 Freeway westbound, near the Aiea off-ramp in the Aiea area.

It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section that a 33-year-old male motorist and his 33-year-old and 24-year-old male passengers were traveling westbound on the H-1 Freeway in a box truck containing multiple propane tanks, when the vehicle’s roll up door became ajar.

The 33-year-old male motorist then came to a stop to secure the door and was rear ended by a 73-year-old female motorist who was also
traveling westbound on the H-1 Freeway.

As a result of the collision, 73-year-old female motorist had to be extricated by the Honolulu Fire Department. She was then taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

The 33-year-old male motorist also sustained inquires and was taken to an area hospital in serious condition. His condition was later upgraded to good.

Both male passengers of the box truck complained of pain but refused treatment at the scene.

At this time neither speed, drugs, nor alcohol appear to be contributing factors of this collision.

The investigation is on going.
