On 12-22-2020, at about 2130 hours, a serious motor vehicle collision occurred in the Kailua area. The collision involved 2 vehicles, a 2013 Nissan Altima with 1 driver and 1 passenger, and a 2012 Nissan Altima with 1 driver.

A 26 year old male and his 26 year old passenger, were traveling southbound on Kalanianaole Highway when he proceeded to make an illegal U-turn at Kapaa Quarry Road where there was a sign posted that prohibits U-turns at that intersection.  As the male turned into the northbound lanes of Kalanianaole Highway, his vehicle was broadsided by a 53 year male who had the green light. The 26 year old male lost control and collided into the guardrail. 

As a result of the collision, the 26 year old driver was taken to an area hospital in serious but stable condition.  The 26 year old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

This is the 53rd Traffic Fatality of 2020 compared to 50 at the same time last year in 2019.

The investigation is ongoing.
