On January 23, 2021, at about 10:55 P.M., there was a fatal motor vehicle collision near the intersection of Mahailua Street and Kakaina Street in the Waimanalo area.

A 27-year-old Kailua male was traveling southbound on Mahailua Street when his passenger a 28-year-old Kailua male who was riding in the bed of the pickup truck for unknown reasons fell out of the pickup truck bed. The 28-year-old male passenger was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. The 28-year-old male passengers condition deteriorated, and he later succumbed to his injuries.

At this time, neither speed, drugs, or alcohol appear to be contributing factors.

This is the 5th Traffic Fatality of 2021 compared to 6 at the same time in 2020.

The investigation is ongoing.
