On August 06, 2025, the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, was notified by the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office that the 78-year-old male moped rider involved in this collision had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
This is the 49th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 25 at the same time in 2024.
The investigation remains ongoing.

On August 2, 2025, at about 2:50 AM, a critical motor vehicle collision involving a moped and a pedestrian occurred on Kapahulu Avenue, north of Mooheau Avenue in the Waikiki area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 78-year-old male moped rider was traveling northbound on Kapahulu Avenue, when he collided with a 77-year-old male pedestrian who was walking in a marked crosswalk against the red palm signal.
As a result of the collision, the 78-year-old male moped rider was ejected onto the roadway and transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in serious condition where he was later downgraded to critical condition.
The 78-year-old male moped operator was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The 77-year-old male pedestrian was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in good condition.
At this time, neither speed, drugs, nor alcohol appear to be contributing factors of this collision.
