On July 11, 2025, at about 11:15 PM, a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a moped occurred in the area of Kalanianaole Highway and Bell Street in the Waimanalo area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 44-year-old male motorist was traveling northbound on Kalanianaole Highway when he traveled into the southbound lane and struck a 41-year-old female moped rider.
As a result of the collision, the 41-year-old moped rider was ejected onto the roadway and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 41-year-old moped rider was not wearing a helmet.
The 44-year-old motorist sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision.
The 44-year-old motorist was subsequently placed under arrest for Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant and Negligent Homicide in the First Degree.
At this time, alcohol appears to be a contributing factor of this collision. It is unknown if speed or drugs are a contributing factor.
This is the 42nd Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 19 at the same time in 2024.
The investigation is ongoing.
