Traffic Fatality #38 of 2023

Google map of Kapiolani Boulevard and Ward Avenue

On Thursday, September 7, 2023, at approximately 4:20 P.M., a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a motorcyclist occurred in the area of Kapiolani Boulevard just past Ward Avenue in the Kakaako area.

It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section that a 65-year-old male motorist was traveling westbound on Kapiolani Boulevard, attempting to turn into the eastbound lanes of traffic to enter a private establishment.

As the 65-year-old male motorist made the turn, he was broadsided by a 25-year-old male motorcyclist traveling eastbound on Kapiolani Boulevard at a high rate of speed.

As a result of the collision, the 25-year-old male motorcyclist careened into the westbound lanes of Kapiolani Boulevard into the path of travel of a 61-year-old male motorist, where they collided head-on.

As a result of the collision, the 25-year-old male motorcyclist was ejected onto the roadway.

The 25-year-old male motorcyclist was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The 25-year-old male motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

Neither the 65-year-old male motorist nor the 61-year-old motorist were injured as a result of the collision.

At this time, speed appears to be a contributing factor.  It is unknown if drugs and alcohol were contributing factors of this collision.

This is the 38th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 35 at the same time in 2022.

The investigation is ongoing.
