UPDATE: To reflect the Traffic Fatality count for 2022.
On September 14, 2022, at about 2:00 p.m., a fatal motor vehicle collision occurred in the Aiea area, involving a vehicle with two occupants.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section that a Honda Sport Utility Vehicle, driven by a 78 year old male, was traveling eastbound on Kamehameha Highway. While in the area east of McGrew Loop, the vehicle veered towards the center median and struck the rail transit concrete pillar.
The operator of the Honda vehicle was transported to an area hospital in serious condition. His 78 year old female passenger was also taken to an area hospital in critical condition. While at the hospital, the passengers condition deteriorated and she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
Speed, drugs, and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors of this collision.
This was the 36th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 34 at this same time in 2021.
The investigation is on-going.
