UPDATE: To reflect the Traffic Fatality count for 2022.
On September 3, 2022, at about 5:30 AM, a fatal hit and run motor vehicle collision occurred in the area of Mokapu Boulevard and Ilipio Street in the Kailua area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section that a 68 year old male pedestrian was walking in the westbound lanes of traffic of Mokapu Boulevard when he was struck by an unknown vehicle that left the scene.
The male was taken to an area hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
At the time of the collision the 68 year old male pedestrian was outside of a marked crosswalk.
Shortly thereafter Honolulu Police were able to locate the vehicle that left the scene.
At this time, it is unknown if speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in this collision.
This is the 35th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year as compared to 33 at the same time as 2021.
