UPDATE: To reflect the Traffic Fatality count for 2022.
On September 1, 2022, at about 6:40 AM, a fatal motor vehicle collision occurred in the area of Kunia Road and Kunia Drive.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 57-year-old male motorist and his passenger, a 51-year-old male, were on Kunia Drive attempting to turn left onto Kunia Road to travel northbound.
As the 57-year-old male motorist entered Kunia Road, he was broadsided by a 20-year-old motorist who was traveling southbound on Kunia Road.
As a result of the collision, the 57-year-old male motorist was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 51-year-old passenger and the 20-year-old motorist were both taken to an area hospital in serious condition.
At this time, speed appears to be a contributing factor of this collision. It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
This is the 34th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 33 at the same time in 2021.
The investigation is ongoing.
