On January 4, 2026, at about 8:00 PM, a fatal motor vehicle collision involving multiple vehicles and two pedestrians occurred on the H-1 Freeway (westbound), prior to the Makakilo Off-Ramp in the Kapolei area.

It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 32-year-old male motorist was traveling westbound on the H-1 Freeway, when he attempted to avoid a collision with another vehicle and lost control as he traveled into the right shoulder lane, up the dirt embankment, and back into the shoulder lane where he sideswiped two unoccupied vehicles parked in the shoulder lane.

The 32-year-old male motorist continued traveling westbound in the shoulder lane and rear-ended another parked and unoccupied vehicle, that subsequently struck a 24-year-old male pedestrian and a 26-year-old male pedestrian who were changing the vehicle’s tire.

The force of the collision propelled the rear-ended vehicle forward, causing it to rollover multiple times, before it struck another parked and unoccupied vehicle in the shoulder lane.

As a result of the collision, the 24-year-old male pedestrian was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition.

The 26-year-old male pedestrian succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 32-year-old male motorist remained at the scene and was not injured as a result of the collision.

At this time, speed, drugs, or alcohol do not appear to be a contributing factor of this collision.

This is the 3rd Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year compared to 1 at the same time in 2025.

The investigation is ongoing.
