On January 27th, 2021, at approximately 6:40 p.m., a fatal motor vehicle collision occurred in the Makapuu area involving three vehicles.
A Toyota sedan, operated by a 77 year old female, was traveling southbound on Kalanianaole Highway when for unknown reasons, she veered over the double solid yellow lane markings and sideswiped a Toyota pickup truck, operated by an 18 year old female, who was traveling northbound. The Toyota continued and collided head-on, into a Honda sedan, operated by a 75 year old female.
The operator of the Toyota sedan was transported to an area hospital in critical condition where she later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. The operator of the Honda was transported to an area hospital in serious condition. The operator of the Toyota pickup remained on scene and was not injured.
At this time, speed does not appear to be a contributing factor in this collision. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were.
This is the third traffic fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to five at this same time last year.
