On May 10, 2025, at about 4:45 A.M., a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a motorcyclist occurred on the H-1 Freeway westbound near the Kaimakani street overpass in the Aiea area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 39-year-old motorist was traveling westbound on the Moanalua Freeway when he attempted to change lanes and collided with a 40-year-old male motorcyclist traveling westbound on the Moanalua Freeway at a high rate.
As a result of the initial collision, the 40-year-old motorcyclist was then redirected into the metal guardrail and was ejected from the motorcycle onto the roadway.
The 40-year-old motorcyclist operator was taken to Pali Momi Medical Center in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The 40-year-old motorcyclist operator was wearing a helmet during the collision.
The 39-year-old male motorist was not injured and determined to be under the influence and subsequently arrested for Negligent Homicide in the First Degree. and Operating a Vehicle under the Influence of an Intoxicant (OVUII).
At this time, both speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors of this collision. It is unknown if drugs were a contributing factor.
This is the 28th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year as compared to 11 at the same time in 2024.
The investigation is ongoing.
