On August 12, 2026, at about 11:23 A.M., a critical motor vehicle collision involving a moped occurred on Kamehameha Highway in the Haleiwa area.

It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 51-year-old male moped operator was traveling northbound on Kamehameha Highway when, for unknown reasons, he traveled to the right of the roadway and lost control. The 51-year-old male moped operator was then ejected onto the unimproved shoulder area.

As a result of the collision, the 51-year-old male moped operator was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The 51-year-old male moped operator was not was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

At this time, speed does not appear to be a factor of this collision. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol is a factor.

This is the 25th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 52 at the same time in 2025.

The investigation is ongoing.
