On Sunday, May 29, 2022, at about 1:58 p.m., a motor vehicle collision occurred in the Kaaawa area involving a moped and a vehicle.
A Honda moped operated by a 19 year old male, was traveling southbound on Kamehameha Highway with a group of about 7 other mopeds. For an unknown reason, the operator of a white colored moped may have applied its brakes, causing a rear-end collision. As a result of the initial impact, the 19 year old male lost control, flipped over the handlebars, and into the northbound lane. The moped landed directly into the path of a Kia MPVH, that was operated by a 61 year old male.
The 19 year old male was taken to a nearby hospital and was initially listed as being in critical condition. His condition deteriorated and he succumbed to his injuries and died. It is unknown if he was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The operator, of the Kia, his 60 year old female front seat passenger and 12 year old male rear passenger were all uninjured.
At this time, speed, drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in this collision.
This was the 21st traffic fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 20 at this same time last year.
This investigation is ongoing.
