On June 18, 2026, at about 6:09 AM, a motor vehicle collision involving a single vehicle occurred in the Kailua area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 16-year-old juvenile female motorist was traveling northbound on Pali Highway, at a high rate of speed, when she lost control and struck the right concrete barrier causing the 16-year-old female motorist to travel airborne over the barrier and drop approximately 50 feet down into a ravine. The vehicle continued traveling across the ravine, struck an embankment, and became engulfed in flames.
As a result of the collision, the 16-year-old female motorist was ejected from the vehicle into the ravine and subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.
The 16-year-old female was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
The 16-year-old female operator had to be extracted from the ravine by the Honolulu Fire Department.
At this time, speed appears to be a contributing factor in this collision. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol is a contributing factor.
This is the 20th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 38 at the same time in 2025.
The investigation is ongoing.
