On Sunday, May 22, 2022, at about 3:23 p.m., a fatal motor vehicle collision occurred in the Wahiawa area, involving a motorcycle.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section that a Yamaha motorcycle operated by a 52 year old male, was traveling westbound on Kaukonahua Road. While about 3/4 mile west of Kamananui Road, it drove onto the opposite bound lane to overtake a vehicle.
Upon overtaking this vehicle, it veered back into its lane to avoid an oncoming truck. The motorcycle then lost control and drove off the road and struck a drainage ditch and a wooden utility pole before coming to final rest.
Although a helmet was worn, it was not securely fastened.
The motorcyclist was taken to an area hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries and died.
Speed appeared to be a contributing factor in this collision. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors.
This is the 19th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 20 at this same time last year.
Thus investigation is ongoing.
