On Sunday, March 20, 2022, at about 5:20 p.m., a Major Motor Vehicle Collision occurred in the Waipahu area, involving two vehicles and a bicyclist.
A 13 year old male operating an electric bicycle, was traveling westbound on Waipahu Street when it rear-ended a Toyota SUV just prior to the Peke Lane intersection. Following the initial impact, the bicyclist veered into the opposite bound lane where it was struck by a Toyota pickup truck.
The 28 year old female driver of the Toyota SUV was not injured and remained at the scene. The Toyota truck driven by a 66 year old male and his 67 year old passenger, were also not injured and remained at the scene.
The bicyclist who was not wearing a helmet, was transported to an area hospital in Critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries and died.
Speed, drugs, and alcohol were not factors on part of the motorists.
Speed may be a factor on part of the bicyclist. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors.
This is the 16th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 13 at this same time last year.
This investigation is ongoing.
