On February 28, 2025, at about 7:40 AM, a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a bicyclsit occurred at the intersection of Tantlus Drive and Moreira Street in the Makiki area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 74-year-old male bicyclist was traveling westbound on Tantalus Drive when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a 76-year-old male motorist traveling eastbound on Tantalus Drive attempting to make a left turn onto Moreira Street.
As a result of the collision, the 74-year-old bicyclist was ejected onto the roadway and transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The 74-year-old bicyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The 76-year-old motorist remained at the scene and was not injured.
At this time, neither speed, drugs, nor alcohol appear to be contributing factors in this collision.
This is the 13th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year as compared to 5 at the same time in 2024.
The investigation is on-going.
