On February 26, 2022, at about 10:30 PM, a fatal motor vehicle collision involving six vehicles and one pedestrian occurred on Haleakala Avenue in the Waianae area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section that a 27-year-old male motorist was traveling northeast on Haleakala Avenue at a high rate of speed when he lost control an collided into a parked vehicle with a 38-year-old female occupant and a 7-year-old female occupant.
As a result of the collision, the 38-year-old female and the 7-year-old female succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A 17-year-old pedestrian in the area was also injured as a result of this collision and taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
The 27-year-old male motorist was subsequently placed under arrest for two counts of Negligent Homicide in the First Degree and Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant.
At this time, it is unknown if drugs were contributing factors. Speed and alcohol appear to be a contributing factors in this collision.
This is the 10th and 11th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 7 at this same time in 2021.
The investigation is ongoing.
