On January 14, 2022, at about 11:00 PM, a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian occurred at the intersection of Nimitz Highway and Sand Island Access Road in the Kalihi area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section that a 48-year-old Pearl City male motorist was traveling westbound on Nimitz Highway. As the 48-year-old Pearl City male motorist approached the intersection, he collided with a 66-year-old Waipahu male pedestrian who was crossing Nimitz Highway in a marked crosswalk against the “Do Not Walk Sign.”
As a result of the collision, the 66-year-old Waipahu male pedestrian was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The 48-year-old Pearl City male motorist was not injured as a result of the collision.
At this time, neither speed, drugs, nor alcohol appear to be contributing factors.
This is the 1st Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 3 at this same time in 2021.
The investigation is ongoing.
