On May 7, 2026, at about 10:44 P.M., a motor vehicle collision involving a moped occurred on Kuhio Avenue in the Waikiki Area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 42-year-old male motorist was traveling eastbound on Kuhio Avenue when he executed a left turn at the intersection of Nahua Street and struck a 24-year-old female moped operator and her 25-year-old male passenger, who was traveling westbound on Kuhio Avenue. The 42-year-old male motorist continued traveling northbound on Nahua Street without stopping to render aid or provide information.
As a result of the collision, the 24-year-old female moped operator and her 25-year-old male passenger were ejected onto the roadway. The 24-year-old female moped operator was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in serious condition.
The 25-year-old male passenger refused treatment at the scene.
The 24-year-old female moped operator was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The 25-year-old male passenger was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The 42-year-old male motorist was later located and subsequently placed under arrest for Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant.
The 42-year-old male motorist was not injured as a result of the collision.
At this time alcohol appears to be a contributing factor of this collision. Speed does not appear to be a contributing factor of this collision and it is unknown if drugs are a contributing factor.
The investigation is ongoing.
