On June 6, 2025, at about 2:20 PM, a serious hit-and-run collision involving a pedestrian occurred at the intersection of North Hotel Street and Maunakea Street in the Downtown Honolulu area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that an on-duty HPD officer observed an unidentified moped operator commit multiple traffic violations. The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
The moped operator failed to stop and turned onto North Hotel Street from Smith Street, continuing westbound. While doing so, the moped struck an 80-year-old female pedestrian who was attempting to cross North Hotel Street within a marked crosswalk.
Following the initial impact, the moped was involved in a secondary collision with a 47-year-old female motorist who was traveling southbound on Maunakea Street.
The moped operator fled the scene and has not yet been identified.
As a result of the collision, the 80-year-old pedestrian was transported to an area hospital in serious condition. The 47-year-old motorist and her passengers remained at the scene and reported no injuries.
At this time, it is unknown whether speed, drugs, or alcohol were contributing factors in the collision.
