(Update) Traffic Fatality #7 of 2023

**UPDATE**

On February 16, 2023, at about 6:30 PM, the operator of the pickup truck had turned himself into the Alapai Police Headquarters where he was subsequently placed under arrest for the offenses of Collisions Involving Death or Serious Bodily Injury, Collisions Involving Bodily Injury, and Negligent Homicide in the First Degree. The operator was later released pending further investigation.

On February 15, 2023, at about 06:42 AM, a fatal hit and run motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian occurred at the intersection of Kapiolani Boulvard and Kamakee Street in the Honolulu area.

It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section that two juvenile pedestrians were attempting to cross Kapiolani Boulevard in a marked crosswalk when they were struck by a pickup truck driven by an unknown motorist who has yet to be identified.

The unknown motorist fled the scene of the collision and was last seen traveling westbound on Kapiolani Boulevard. The pickup truck was located unoccupied shortly thereafter and was recovered as evidence.

Both juveniles were taken to an area hospital, one in good condition and the other in critical condition, where the latter succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.

At this time speed appears to be a contributing factor. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were contributing factors of this collision.

This is the 7th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 7 at this same time in 2022.

If anyone has any information, please contact the HPD Traffic Division at 808 723-3413.

The investigation is ongoing.
