On Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at about 7:30 p.m., a Major Motor Vehicle Collision occurred in the Chinatown area involving a pedestrian.
A BMW station wagon operated by a 36 year old male, was traveling westbound on Nimitz Highway when it struck a pedestrian east of the Kekaulike Street intersection. The operator of the BMW was not injured and remained at the scene.
For unknown reasons, the 72 year old male pedestrian was laying on the roadway of the marked crosswalk, when the BMW collided into him. He was transported to an area hospital in critical condition with injuries to his head and body.
While at the hospital, the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries and died.
Speed, drugs, and alcohol does not appear to be contributing factors on part of the motorist.
It was unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors on part of the pedestrian.
This is the 40th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 48 at this same time last year.
This investigation is ongoing.
