On April 3, 2022, at about 8:30 pm, a critical motor vehicle collision occurred in the Waianae area. It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section that a 69-year-old male motorist was turning into a private driveway on Hakimo Road when, for unknown reasons, he accelerated and struck a parked and unoccupied vehicle. The male may have been suffering from a medical condition.
As a result of the collision, the 69-year-old male motorist was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
The male was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
At this time, speed appears to be a contributing factor in the collision. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol are a factor at this time.
The investigation is ongoing.
