On July 25, 2020, just after midnight, a critical motor vehicle collision occurred on Kamehameha Highway prior to Malaekahana Valley Road in the Kahuku area.
On July 25, 2020, just after midnight, a four-door Nissan sedan with six occupants was traveling northbound on Kamehameha Highway at a high rate of speed when it attempted to overtake a Chevrolet pickup truck also traveling northbound.
As the four-door Nissan sedan attempted to overtake the Chevrolet pickup, it subsequently sideswiped the Chevrolet pickup and traveled back into the northbound lane and onto the northbound shoulder where it collided with a fire hydrant protection bollard.
The four-door Nissan sedan continued on the northbound shoulder before colliding with a second fire hydrant protection bollard then going airborne ejecting all six of the occupants before coming to final rest upon colliding with a utility pole.
As a result of the collision the four-door, Nissan sedan became engulfed in flames before being extinguished by HFD.
Of the six occupants, two were taken to an area hospital in critical condition, and the other four occupants were taken to an area hospital in serious condition.
The lone occupant of the Chevrolet pickup was not injured.
At this time, speed appears to be a contributing factor. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
The investigation is ongoing.
