On July 20, 2025, at about 3:45 AM, a critical Motor Vehicle Collision occurred on the H-1 W Freeway, west of the Punahou Street overpass in the Makiki area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 25-year-old female motorist was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of the H-1 W Freeway when it struck a 77-year-old male motorist who was traveling westbound in the #2 lane. Bystanders who arrived at the scene after the collision assisted to extract the 25-year-old female motorist from the vehicle.
As a result of the collision, the 25-year-old motorist was transported to an area hospital in critical condition and the 77-year-old motorist was transported in good condition.
The 25-year-old motorist was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
At this time, it is unknown if alcohol or drugs is a contributing factor. Speed is not believed to be a contributing factor of this collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
