On May 17, 2025, at about 3:04 P.M., a critical motor vehicle collision involving a moped occurred near the intersection of Keeaumoku Street and Kanunu Street in the Ala Moana area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 20-year-old female moped rider and an 18-year-old female passenger were traveling southbound on Keeaumoku Street when she attempted to come to a stop at the intersection of Keeaumoku Street and Kanunu Street.
Prior to coming to a complete stop, the 20-year-old female moped rider lost her balance causing her and the moped, as well as the 18-year-old female passenger to fall over onto the roadway.
As the 20-year-old moped rider and her passenger were still on the ground, they were both struck by a 21-year-old female motorist traveling southbound on Keeaumoku Street in the adjacent lane.
As a result of the collision, both the 20-year-old moped rider and her 18-year-old female passenger were transported to an area hospital in serious condition.
While at an area hospital, the 18-year-old female passenger’s condition deteriorated and she was later listed in critical condition.
The 20-year-old female moped rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. The 18-year-old female moped passenger was not wearing a helmet.
The 21-year-old female motorist remained at the scene.
The 21-year-old female motorist and her passengers a 51-year-old female, a 18-year-old female, a 24-year-old female, and a juvenile male were not injured.
At this time, speed, alcohol, or drugs do not appear to be a contributing factor in this collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
