On May 20, 2026, the Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section was notified by the Medical Examiner’s Office that the
Unit 1 operator involved in this motor vehicle collision had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
This is the 15th Traffic Fatality of 2025 as compared to 30 at the same time in 2025.
The investigation remains ongoing
On May 11, 2026, at about 12:00 PM, a critical motor vehicle collision occurred on the North King Street off-ramp of the Moanalua Freeway eastbound, in the Kalihi area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 93-year-old male motorist was traveling westbound in the wrong direction towards eastbound traffic on the North King Street off-ramp and struck a 41-year-old male motorist who was traveling eastbound.
As a result of the collision, the 93-year-old male motorist was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition.
The 41-year-old male motorist complained of pain, but refused treatment at the scene.
The 93-year-old motorist and the 41-year-old motorist were both wearing their seatbelts at the time of the collision.
At this time speed, drugs, or alcohol do not appear to be a contributing factor of this collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
