On May 2, 2026, at about 2:03 AM, a critical motor vehicle collision, involving a moped, occurred on North School Street in the Nuuanu area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, a 19-year-old male moped operator and his unidentified male passenger was traveling eastbound on North School Street prior to Likelike Highway when it attempted to flee officers initiating a traffic stop. The 19-year-old male moped operator, traveling at a high rate of speed, veered to the right of the roadway and struck the curb.
As a result of the collision, the 19-year-old male moped operator and his unidentified male passenger were ejected onto the sidewalk. The unidentified male passenger was subsequently transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in serious condition where he was later listed in critical condition
The 19-year-old male moped operator and unidentified male passenger were not wearing helmets at the time of the collision.
At this time speed appears to be a contributing factor of this collision. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol are a contributing factor.
The investigation is ongoing.
