On January 26, 2026, at about 6:22 AM, a critical motor vehicle collision involving a moped occurred on Waipahu Street in the Waipahu area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 71-year-old male moped operator was traveling westbound on Waipahu Street and attempted to execute a left turn into a driveway, when it was struck by a 48-year-old female motorist traveling eastbound on Waipahu Street.
As a result of the collision, the 71-year-old male moped operator was ejected onto the roadway and transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in serious condition where he was later listed in critical condition.
The 48-year-old female motorist remained at the scene and was not injured as a result of the collision.
The 71-year-old male moped rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
At this time, speed, drugs, or alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors of this collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
