***UPDATE***
On November 7, 2022, the Vehicular Homicide Section was notified by the Medical Examiner’s office that the 36 year old male operator of the moped involved in this collision had succumbed to his injuries.
This is the 42nd Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 37 at this same time last year.
On November 5, 2022, at about 7:30 p.m., a serious hit and run motor vehicle collision occurred involving an unknown vehicle and a moped.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that an unknown sedan was headed west on Kalanianaole Highway in the Waimanalo area, and rear ended a moped, operated by a 36 year old male.
The collision caused the moped operator to be ejected onto the pavement where he sustained critical head and bodily injuries. He was taken to an area hospital where he was listed as being in critical condition. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The unknown sedan did not stop after the collision, and continued westbound on Kalanianaole Highway in the Kailua direction.
At this time, speed appears to be a factor on the part of the unknown sedan. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors.
Any witnesses are asked to call the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section at 808-723-3413.
The investigation is on going.
