On March 13, 2022, at about 2:45 AM, a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a single moped occurred on Akaakaawa Street in the Kailua area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section that a 42-year-old male motorist was traveling eastbound on Akaakaawa Street when he lost control, veered off of the roadway onto the sidewalk, and collided into a tree. The 42-year-old male motorist was ejected onto the roadway.
As a result of the collision, the 42-year-old male motorist succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
The 42-year-old male motorist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
At this time, speed appears to be a contributing factor. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
This is the 15th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 12 at this same time in 2021.
The investigation is ongoing.
