On January 1, 2026, at about 5:50 A.M., a serious motor vehicle collision involving a moped occurred on Paiea Street in the Airport area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 61-year-old male moped rider was traveling westbound on Kamehameha Highway, when he executed a left turn onto Paiea Street and lost control as it attempted to avoid an unknown female pedestrian who was crossing Paiea Street in a marked crosswalk against the “Do Not Walk” signal, near the intersection of North Nimitz Highway.
As a result of the collision, the 61-year-old moped rider was ejected onto the roadway and transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition and was later listed in serious condition.
The 61-year-old moped rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
At this time, speed does not appear to be a contributing factor in this collision. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol are a factor.
The investigation is ongoing.
