On August 1, 2025, at about 10:04 PM, a critical motor vehicle collision involving a single vehicle occurred on Tantalus Drive north of Kolonahe Place, in the Makiki area.

It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 59-year-old motorist was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed on Tantalus Drive, when he lost control, traveled into the southbound lane and into the left shoulder, before colliding with a tree where he came to rest.

As a result of the collision, the 59-year-old motorist was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition. 

The 59-year-old motorist was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision 

At this time speed appears to be a contributing factor of this collision. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol is a contributing factor.
