Update to reflect Traffic Fatality count for 2020.
On August 1, 2020, at about 3:45 A.M., a fatal motor vehicle collision occurred on Likelike Highway (Honolulu bound) prior to the entrance of the John H. Wilson Tunnels in the Kaneohe area.
On August 1, 2020, at about 3:45 A.M., a 19-year-old male driver and his passengers, a 20-year old male, and a 21-year-old male were traveling Honolulu bound on Likelike Highway at a high rate when they came to a bend in the roadway. The 19-year old male lost control of the vehicle and traveled onto the left shoulder and collided with the rock wall that separates the Kaneohe bound exit and Honolulu bound entrance to the John H. Wilson Tunnels.
The 20-year-old and 21-year-old male passengers were both pronounced dead on the scene. The 19-year-old male driver taken to an area hospital in critical condition but was later upgraded to serious condition.
At this time, speed and alcohol both appear to be contributing factors to this collision. It is unknown if drugs were a contributing factor.
This is the 30th and 31st Traffic Fatality of this year compared to 35 at the same time in 2019.
The investigation is ongoing.
