Chief of Police

Rade K. Vanic
Honolulu Police Department

Rade K. Vanic is the Interim Chief of Police for the Honolulu Police Department (HPD), where he leads a workforce of over 2,100 sworn and civilian personnel serving the City and County of Honolulu. With more than 26 years of law enforcement experience, Chief Vanic is a respected leader known for his strategic vision, operational expertise, and strong commitment to modernizing public safety through innovative and ethical use of technology. A longtime HPD veteran, he has the distinction of having worked in every bureau in the department during his career.  Vanic also previously served as interim chief in 2021 and most recently as deputy chief, where he managed internal operations and advanced initiatives in officer wellness and departmental reform.

One of Chief Vanic’s most impactful accomplishments has been the successful introduction and implementation of body-worn cameras across the department. Under his leadership, HPD launched this critical initiative to enhance transparency, officer accountability, and public trust. He directed the planning, procurement, and deployment process, ensuring seamless integration with department policies, training, and digital evidence systems. His efforts have positioned HPD as a more transparent and responsive agency in line with 21st-century policing standards.

In addition to body-worn cameras, Chief Vanic has overseen the department’s broader technology modernization efforts. These include upgrades to HPD’s computer-aided dispatch (CAD) and records management systems (RMS), expanded use of data analytics for crime reduction strategies, and the enhancement of digital infrastructure to support real-time information sharing and investigative efficiency.

Throughout his career, Chief Vanic has held key leadership roles in field operations, specialized units, administration, and strategic planning. His leadership style emphasizes integrity, community collaboration, and innovation. He is a vocal advocate for officer wellness, continuous training, and the use of evidence-based practices in law enforcement decision-making.

A proud graduate of Kamehameha Schools – Kapālama, Chief Vanic holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. He is an active member of the Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA), International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), and other professional law enforcement organizations.

As a committed public servant, Chief Vanic is passionate about advancing ethical policing, fostering innovation in law enforcement, and mentoring the next generation of police leaders. Chief Vanic’s selection to the FBI’s National Executive Institute reflects his unwavering dedication to professional development and his commitment to advancing modern, accountable, and community-focused policing at the highest levels.
