On July 26, 2022, at about 3:55 P.M., a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a bicyclist occurred near Nimitz Highway eastbound and Sumner Street in the Honolulu area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 66-year-old male bicyclist was traveling westbound in the eastbound designated bicycle lane against the flow of traffic.
As the 66-year-old male bicyclist crossed the private entry/exit driveway of Pier 19, he was struck by a 39-year-old male motorist exiting the private roadway entrance attempting to turn right onto Nimitz Highway.
As a result of the collision, the 66-year-old male bicyclist was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.
The 39-year-old male motorist was not injured as a result of the collision and remained at the scene.
The 66-year-old male bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
At this time, neither speed, drugs, nor alcohol appear to be contributing factors.
This is the 26th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 28 at this same time in 2021.
The investigation is ongoing.
