On Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at about 6:30 p.m., the Vehicular Homicide Section was notified by the Medical Examiner’s office that the adult male moped operator who was involved in this collision, succumbed to his injuries and died.
This was the 23rd traffic fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 23 at this same time last year.
This investigation is ongoing.
On Sunday, May 29, 2022, at approximately 5:23 p.m., a major motor vehicle collision occurred in the McCully area, involving a moped and a vehicle.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section that a Honda moped operated by a 30 year old male, was traveling westbound on Lime Street. As the moped approached the Paani Street intersection, it disregarded a stop sign and broadsided a Mazda SUV that was traveling northbound on Paani Street.
As a result of the collision, the 50 year old driver of the Mazda vehicle sustained injuries to his face and refused further treatment. His 45 year old female passenger also sustained injuries to her face and body. She was taken to an area hospital in “Good” condition.
The operator of the moped was not wearing a helmet. He was taken to an area hospital in “Critical” condition with injuries to his head and body.
Speed, drugs, and alcohol were not factors on part of the Mazda vehicle. Speed did not appear to be a factor on part of the moped. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors.
