On Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at approximately 5:40 p.m., a major motor vehicle collision occurred in the Haleiwa area, involving three (3) vehicles.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section that a Honda Civic operated by a 40 year old female, was traveling southbound on Kamehameha Highway. While in the area south of Achiu Lane, the Honda vehicle rear-ended a Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by a 54 year old male and having a 54 year old female passenger, both of whom were tourists.
The initial impact caused the motorcycle to rear-end a Dodge van being operated by a 39 year old male.
The operator of the Honda vehicle and her 4 year old male passenger were not injured and remained at the scene. The operator of the Dodge van was also uninjured and remained at the scene.
Both the operator of the motorcycle and his passenger were transported to an area hospital in critical condition. The passenger however, succumbed to her injuries and died. Both were wearing helmets.
Speed, drugs, and alcohol did not appear to be factors in this collision.
This is the 20th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 20 at this same time last year.
This investigation is ongoing.
