On 3-1-22, the Medical Examiner’s Office called to inform us that the pedestrian in this collision had succumbed to his injuries and died. This is the 12th Traffic Fatality for this year compared to 8 from the same time last year.
This investigation is on going.
On February 27, 2022, at about 9:35 PM, a critical motor vehicle collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian occurred at the intersection of S. King Street and Kalakaua Avenue.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section that a 44-year-old male motorist was traveling southbound on Kalakaua Avenue, when an 83-year-old male entered the crosswalk area, traveling eastbound on S. King Street, with the red palm (do not walk indicator) illuminated at the crosswalk.
The 44-year-old male motorist was unable to stop his vehicle in time and collided into the 83-year-old male pedestrian.
The 44-year-old male motorist remained at the scene.
The 83-year-old male pedestrian was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
Neither speed, alcohol, nor drugs appear to be contributing factors in this collision on the part of the 44-year-old male motorist.
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors on the part of the pedestrian.
The investigation is ongoing.
