On January 29, 2022, at about 1:30 AM, a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a bicyclist occurred at the intersection of Nimitz Highway and Puuhale Road in the Kalihi area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section that a 63-year-old male motorist and his passengers, a 58-year-old male, and a 49 year-old male were traveling westbound on Nimitz Highway. As the 63-year-old male motorist entered the intersection, he collided with a 65-year-old male bicyclist who was crossing Nimitz Highway outside of a marked crosswalk against the “Do Not Walk Sign.”
As a result of the collision, the 65-year-old male bicyclist succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 65-year-old male bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The 63-year-old male motorist and his passengers were not injured as a result of the collision.
At this time, neither speed, drugs, nor alcohol appear to be contributing factors.
This is the 4th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 5 at this same time in 2021.
The investigation is ongoing.
