HONOLULU — The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) has earned its eighth consecutive accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), effective July 25, 2026, along with CALEA’s enhanced Certificate of Meritorious Accreditation recognizing more than 15 years of continuous accredited status.
“This achievement is a testament to the hard work and professionalism of our employees,” said Interim Deputy Chief Rade Vanic. “Maintaining CALEA accreditation demonstrates our continued commitment to accountability, transparency and providing professional, consistent service to the people of Oʻahu.”
CALEA accreditation is widely recognized as a leading standard for public safety agencies. Accredited agencies are assessed on a four-year cycle and must demonstrate ongoing compliance through annual reviews. The accreditation process helps ensure that HPD’s policies, training and operations follow established professional standards, supporting consistent service, accountability and public trust.
HPD earned reaccreditation following a comprehensive assessment of its policies, procedures and operations. The process also included opportunities for public comment and an independent review by CALEA assessors.
During a hearing at the CALEA Summer Conference in Omaha, Nebraska, Vanic represented the department before the commission, which unanimously voted to grant HPD reaccreditation.
The department recognizes the members of HPD’s Office of Accreditation, whose years of preparation and coordination were instrumental in achieving reaccreditation. Special recognition goes to Lt. Daniel Chu, Dets. Sheldon Tateno and Glenn Wada, Cpl. John Bratton and Reserve Officer Terrence Kong for their leadership and dedication throughout the accreditation process.
HPD first earned CALEA accreditation in 2003 and has successfully maintained the designation through each subsequent assessment. The department remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism while strengthening public trust and its partnerships with the community it serves.
