The Honolulu Police Department is reminding the public to remain vigilant when using contactless payment methods and to take precautions to protect their financial information from scams and unauthorized transactions.
Contactless payments allow consumers to quickly pay by tapping a card, mobile phone, or smartwatch at a compatible payment terminal. The technology uses near field communication, which allows devices to exchange information over a very short distance.
HPD recommends taking the following precautions:
- Set up real-time transaction alerts with your bank or card provider so you are immediately notified when your account is used.
- Monitor your accounts regularly for unauthorized transactions and report suspicious activity to your financial institution immediately.
- Check before you tap. Review the payment terminal and confirm the merchant and transaction amount are correct before authorizing payment.
- Be cautious in crowded or unfamiliar areas. Pay attention to where and when you use contactless payment methods.
- Disable NFC when appropriate if your device allows it and you do not regularly use contactless features.
- Consider a radio frequency identification (RFID)-blocking wallet or sleeve for contactless cards if you are concerned about unauthorized scanning.
- Secure your card or device immediately after payment. Put your card away and lock your mobile phone or smartwatch when the transaction is complete.
- Secure your mobile wallet. Use your device’s security features, such as a passcode, Face ID, fingerprint authentication, or other biometric protection.
- Never allow anyone to rush or pressure you into tapping your card or device. Stop and verify the transaction before approving it. If something does not feel right, walk away and use another payment method.
While contactless payments are convenient, criminals may attempt to exploit the technology to obtain your payment information or conduct unauthorized transactions.
Taking a few seconds to stop, check, and verify before completing a contactless payment can help protect your financial information and prevent unauthorized charges.
