On July 22 at approximately 6:35 p.m. District 8 officers were conducting an operation in the Kalaeloa area.
During the operation, a large pit bull emerged from a nearby brush area and charged toward one of the officers. Fearing for his safety, the officer discharged his department-issued firearm at the dog multiple times. The dog turned around and fled the area, and was later found deceased. The Hawaiian Humane Society was contacted to assist.
Officers conducted checks of the surrounding area following the incident and at this time did not locate any injured persons or damaged property.
The Honolulu Police Department recognizes that the loss of an animal is unfortunate. The discharge of the firearm will be reviewed in accordance with department policy.
