Honolulu Police Department (HPD) District 3 Crime Reduction Unit officers arrested Jonalee Popa at approximately 2 p.m. today in the Pearlridge area.

HPD assisted the lead agencies, the Hawaiʻi Department of Law Enforcement and Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, in locating and apprehending Popa.

As those agencies are leading the investigation, any additional questions regarding this incident should be directed to them.

08/29/2026 | ORIGINAL STATEMENT – 8:44 a.m.

The Honolulu Police Department is assisting the Department of Law Enforcement in locating 46-year-old Jonalee Popa.

On August 28, 2026, Popa was released on a work furlough pass and was scheduled to return by 7 p.m. He failed to return. He was declared an escapee at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Popa is described as 5 feet 9 inches tall, approximately 205 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information regarding Popa’s whereabouts is asked to call 911, the Sheriff Division at (808) 586-1352 or Crimestoppers at (808) 955-8300.

Members of the public should not attempt to apprehend him.

In October 2023 Popa’s probation was revoked and he was arrested for an $11,000 warrant. The underlying charges were Assault Against a Law Enforcement Officer in the First Degree.
